Welcome to the Mississippi Civil Rights Project. The William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation has been working with teachers and students to research Mississippi's civil rights history and to develop civil rights curriculum since 2004. At the behest of teachers, the Winter Institute spearheaded passage of SB2718 in 2006, which mandates the teaching of civil rights and human rights history in Mississippi classrooms.
This website offers a centralized resource on Mississippi's rich civil rights history, county by county. It was researched by undergraduate and graduate students over the course of several years. The categories include people, organizations, events, and places that are significant in this history. This project will continue to grow, as teachers and their students research their local communities and submit additional information. As it grows, the site will showcase primary documents, oral histories, lesson plans, and other educational resources.
